The makers of LEGO, the iconic building bricks that millions of children have used to build things for several generations, have released a special edition set to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing.

Apollo 11 in LEGO

NASA and LEGO worked together to create the LEGO Creator Expert NASA Apollo 11 Lunar Lander. The 1,087-piece seat includes pieces to make a model of the lunar lander, two fully suited astronauts, some of their equipment, a few lunar craters, and an American flag.

The LEGO set goes on sale on June 1 and will sell for US$99.99.

Apollo 11 was the mission that first placed human footprints on the Moon. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were those two astronauts, who landed on the Moon on July 20, 1969. Ten more astronauts added their footprints to the lunar surface. Apollo 17, the last lunar mission, left the Moon in 1972.

Aldrin is still very much speaking out for the need to explore and even colonize space. Armstrong died in 2012.

The Denmark-based LEGO has made other forays into space- and scientific setting-based constructions sets. In 2014, the company released its first all-female scientists set Also, in 2011, the crew of space shuttle Endeavour blasted off from the International Space Station for the last time and left behind a group of 30 LEGO models of the space shuttle and the space station–unassembled–for future residents of the space station to use.
