So far this year, 18 governors have announced support for raising teacher salaries. Many of those statements have come in the governors' State of the State addresses. Not all governors have given those speeches yet.

Among the governors voicing support for giving raises to teachers are the governors of Arizona, Oklahoma, and West Virginia–all states that weathered teacher strikes in 2018. The resolution of the six-day Arizona strike, which ended in early May, included an immediate 9-percent raise and a 5-percent raise for the next two years. Oklahoma teachers had received an increase but thought it wasn't enough; after nine days on strike, the union ended the walkout without gaining further concessions from the school district. West Virginia teachers among the first strike in 2018 and gained a 5-percent raise.
