Patrick Mahomes Super Bowl LVII

Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, playing on an injured ankle, directed a drive all the way down the field, pulling off a 26-yard scamper of his own at one point to get his team in field goal range. Then, after winding down the clock, the team turned over to Butker, who had missed a 42-yard attempt earlier in the game.

Mahomes was named the Super Bowl MVP. He was 21-of-27 passing for 182 yards and three touchdowns. He threw no interceptions.

The Chiefs were down 24–14 at the half. Coach Andy Reid had won the toss just before the game started and had elected to get the ball first in the second half. The result was three straight scores for his team, powering them to a 35–27 lead. On the other side of the ball, the Chiefs' defense stepped up and stopped the Eagles on two crucial drives.

With the Chiefs up 28–27, the Chiefs stopped the Eagles after only set of downs and then Kadarius Toney, who had just a few minutes earlier caught the go-ahead touchdown pass, returned the ensuing punt for a Super Bowl-record 65 yards. Three plays later, Mahomes completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Skyy Moore. It was Mahomes's second touchdown completion of the night. Mahomes had connected with Travis Kelce on a 18-yarder for the Chiefs' first touchdown.

The Eagles came right back, storming down the field and scoring, with Hurts once again carrying the ball over the line. Hurts set a Super Bowl record with his three rushing touchdowns. He added to that by scoring the two-point conversion that tied the game at 35–all. Hurts had also recorded a passing touchdown, a 45-yarder to A.J. Brown in the first quarter. Hurts finished 27-for-38 for 304 yards passing and 70 yards rushing.

Kansas City, after finishing with a league-best 14–3 record in the regular season, started their playoff run with a 27–20 victory over Jacksonville. The Chiefs then subdued their recent nemesis, the Cincinnati Bengals, winning 23–20on a 45-yard field goal by Butker with 3 seconds remaining.

The Eagles had equaled the Chiefs' league-best 14–3 regular-season record and then recorded two blowout wins in the playoffs, defeating the New York Giants 38–7 and then mauling the San Francisco 49ers 31–7.

For Mahomes and the Chiefs, it was their third Super Bowl appearance in four years. They won in 2020, defeating the San Francisco 49ers 31–20, and then lost 31–9 to Tampa Bay the following year. It was the Chiefs' fifth time playing for the Lombardi Trophy (having lost 35–10 to the Green Bay Packers in 1967 and defeated the Minnesota Vikings 23–7 in 1970). The Eagles played in the Super Bowl for the first time in 1981, losing to the Oakland Raiders 27–10. They made another appearance in 2005, when Donovan McNabb and crew narrowly lost to the New England Patriots, 24–21. The Eagles finally broke through in 2018, defeating Tampa Bay 41–33.
