It was a more intense initial experience at the National Spelling Bee as hopefuls stayed at the microphone in order to get past three challenging words. The first word was the usual spelling challenge, although the list from which those words was taken numbered 4,000, more than twice the number on last year's list. The second word provided the context for a multiple choice vocabulary question. Finally, participants faced the daunting task of spelling a word from Webster's Unabridged dictionary. Of the total of 229 participants, 88 advanced to the quarterfinals.

The Spelling Bee was back in National Harbor, Md., after a cancellation in 2020 and scaleback last year. The host for the final rounds will be well-known actor and TV presenter LeVar Burton. Returning as an analyst is last year's champion, Zaila Avant-Garde.

This year's winner will receive $52,500 in cash prizes and $400 worth of works from Encyclopedia Britannica. The second-place and third-place finishers will receive cash prizes of $25,000 and $15,000, respectively. Also receiving cash rewards will be the next three finishers ($10,000 for fourth, $5,000 for fifth, and $2,500 for sixth). More widely, all participants will receive a one-year subscription to the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online dictionary and to Britannica Online premium; all participants will also receive a 2022 U.S. Mint Proof set.
