Team Ruff won Puppy Bowl XVII in dramatic fashion, coming from behind to defeat Team Fluff 73–69.

Puppy Bowl XVII

Winning the game for Team Ruff was the American Staffordshire Terrier-Dutch Shepherd mix Big Boss Paulie, who scored a touchdown as time expired. Officials named Team Fluff's Marshall (right), a hearing-impaired terrier, the game's Most Valuable Puppy.

Keeping the peace on the field was longtime "rufferee" Dan Schachner. Covering the puppyfest were human announcers Sage Steele and Steve Levy. Official hosts for the day were home improvement maven Martha Stewart and rapper Snoop Dogg. Making a special appearance was First Lady Jill Biden, whose two dogs, Champ and Major, now live in the White House (with Major being the first shelter dog to do so).

The annual event featured 70 puppies from 22 animal shelters across the country. Puppy cheerleaders howled for the two teams, and stealing the halftime show again this year was a group of dancing cats. As in previous years, all animals were adopted after the game. Officials reported that 2.1 million people watched the game.

The Puppy Bowl is an annual precursor to the Super Bowl, professional football's championship game. Winning that contest this year were the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, claiming their second Lombardi Trophy. Their quarterback, Tom Brady, won his seventh title overall (the other six coming with his former team, the New England Patriots). Tampa Bay defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31–9. The Chiefs won last year.
