2020 Summer Olympics logoThree sports will make their debut at next year's Olympic Games: skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing. Four years later, break dancing will join the mix.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) made the announcements, along with solidifying the total of medal events for the 2024 Olympics, to take place in Paris. That total, for Paris, was set at 329, 10 fewer than the total on offer next year in Tokyo, in which is still being billed the 2020 Olympics. Those Games start on July 24, 2021 and finish on August 9. Earlier in the year, toymaker Mattel announced that it would release Barbie dolls for each of the new sports in Tokyo.

The IOC also instituted strict rules for participation in Tokyo amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Athletes will be able to arrive at their accommodation in the Athletes Village no more than five days before they are due to start competition and must leave within two days of their competition's finishing.

Among the sports losing the most medal opportunities was weightlifting. The IOC announced that the 2024 Games will accept a total of 120 weightlifting athletes, less than half those who took part in the 2016 Olympics, in Rio de Janeiro.

As for break dancing, it will officially be called breaking, as it was known in the 1970s. The event won popular support after its debut at the 2018 Youth Olympics, in Bueno Aires. The breaking events will take place at Place de le Concorde, in downtown Paris.

Five new Barbie dolls will help celebrate new sports at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
