5 Things Everyone Should Know about Zachary Taylor

 

  • Taylor's daughter Sarah was briefly the wife of Jefferson Davis, later President of the Confederacy. The two were married in 1835, but Sarah died of malaria three months later.
  • Taylor's son Richard served as a general in the Confederate Army.
  • One man who served under Taylor during the Mexican-American War was Ulysses S. Grant, who would go on to win the Civil War for the Union and served as President.
  • Taylor was the first President to appoint a Secretary of the Interior. His predecessor in the White House, James K. Polk, had signed the bill creating the new Cabinet-level department in his last days in office.
  • He was the last President to own slaves while in office.
