Athletes competing in this year's Olympic Games will have to follow a strict set of rules; if they do not, they face disqualification.

Among the rules to be enforced by the International Olympic Committee:

  • 2020 Summer Olympics logo Race officials will test athletes early and often for any signs of the COVID-19 virus. Athletes coming from outside Japan will be tested within four days of their entry into the country and then immediately after they have arrived.
  • A three-day quarantine following arrival is mandatory.
  • Also mandatory is use of an smartphone app, to be used for contract tracing and for reporting of body temperature and other medical information.
  • Any athlete who tests positive for the coronavirus must go into immediate isolation.
  • Within the Olympic environment, athletes must stay two meters (6.5 feet) apart, unless they are on a playing field involved in an event that involves more than individual competition. Race officials will officially discourage (but not ban) handshakes, high-fives, hugs, and other traditional signs of respect and encouragement that involve contact between individuals.
  • Athletes must wear masks unless they are eating, drinking, sleeping, training, or competing.
  • Athletes must stay within the Olympic environment and are not allowed to be tourists within the country at large.

The Olympics, already postponed from last year but still named the 2020 Summer Olympics, are scheduled to run July 24–August 9, even as the country remains under a state of emergency. That Japanese government plans to lift that on June 20 and, the next day, start vaccinating people at workplaces and universities.
