4. Indonesia

The world's fourth-most populous country is one of the most widespread, with more than 13,000 islands calling the country home. Indonesia, as of July 2015, had 255,993,674 people. The island of Java by itself has more than half of that population. The country and/or its various islands have been ruled by various civilizations and empires through the years. The independent Indonesia emerged in 1945.


3. United States

The population of the United States in July 2015 was 321,368,864. The U.S. is far and away the most populous nation in North America and has the third-largest population in the world. The former English colony declared its independence in 1776.


2. India

The world's second country to crest the 1-billion-people mark, India had an official population of 1,251,695,584 in July 2015. Home to several ancient civilizations, India was also the origin location of four religions (Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism). The longtime English colony gained its independence in 1947.
