Definition: The first major city in Sumeria, founded about 3500 B.C. The first king of Uruk was Gilgamesh. This man is alternately said to be the inspiration for the great story the Epic of Gilgamesh or the actual man. Whatever the case, Gilgamesh built the city's walls. In its day, Uruk was larger than other city-states put together. Some experts have estimated Uruk's population at close to 50,000 people.
