Definition: Ancient network of road and trip travel that brought goods like silk from China to the Roman Empire and then to the rest of the Western world. The Silk Road was important because it helped cultures and traditions (not to mention precious goods) flow back and forth between the West and the East. And once the rich Romans got a feel for Chinese silk, they couldn't get enough.
