Roman Republic


Definition: Roman general and member of the First Triumvirate who fought against Julius Caesar and was killed in this struggle. He was known as "Pompey the Great" for his famous victories before this civil war, including the defeat of Sulla. Pompey also played a leading role in the defeat of the slave revolt begun by Spartacus.
