Definition: Famous battle in which Alexander again routed Darius despite overwhelmingly unfavorable odds. This time, Alexander wasn't so much outnumbered as he was outmanuevered. Darius had pinned Alexander down in a place riddled with thunderstorms that didn't allow the Macedonians any rest. Darius had also come upon the rear of the Macedonian line, meaning that Alexander would have to rotate his army completely around to fight the enemy. But the Macedonians, tired and disoriented, still proved too much for the Persians, breaking up the grand plan of Darius and, in fact, chasing him from the field of battle. He retreated so quickly that he left his mother, wife, and children behind. Alexander treated them as royalty.
