Definition: Originally free people called the Laconians, they were conquered by Sparta and forced to work for the Sparta state or to serve in the army. The helots were neither slaves nor free, existing somewhere in the middle. Even slaves had the right to be fed by their masters; the helots did not. The main city of Laconia was Helos, a possible source for the word helot.
