Definition: Organization of island city-states and Asia Minor colonies formed after the Persian Wars to protect against future Persian invasions. Headquarters was in Delos, an island colony in the Aegean Sea. Athens eventually took over the Delian League and used it to further its ambitions for empire. The result was unrest and, eventually war--the Peloponnesian War.
