Definition: Founder of Persian Empire. He did this by conquering his neighbors, including the Lydians, Parthians, and Medes. He solidified his power by naming his rivals satraps, or sub-kings, each of which ruled one province in Cyrus's name. He was succeeded by emperors who wanted to conquer Greece, among them Xerxes and Darius.
