Definition: Largest arena in Rome, with a capacity of 50,000. Opened in A.D. 80, it was home to all kinds of entertainment and spectacles. Its round shape meant that chariot races were not part of the program, but just about everything else was eventually fair game, including animal fights, gladiator bouts, games, and much more.
