Definition: Major Phoenician city originally called "Gubla" or "Gebal." The name Byblos comes from the Greek for 'papyrus.' Not surprisingly, Byblos was a major source of papyrus. Other facts:

  • Byblos was a city in the land called Canaan.
  • The Phoenician alphabet is said to have developed in Byblos.
