Definition: Mountain range that formed a convenient northern boundary for the Roman Republic and early Empire. The great Carthaginian General Hannibal crossed the Alps with his troops during the Second Punic War. The Romans were continually fighting against the Gauls, Celts, and others who lived just on the other side of the Alps.
