Definition: Lincoln's Secretary of State. He was also present at the Hampton Roads peace conference. A founder of the Republican Party, he began his political career as a member of the Whig Party in the New York state legislature. He served as governor of New York from 1839 to 1842 and was a U.S. Senator beginning in 1849. Seward was wounded in an assassination attempt the night Lincoln died but recovered and served as Secretary of State under President Andrew Johnson. He is also known for securing the purchase of what became the state of Alaska.
