Definition: Two-day (April 6-7, 1862) battle ending in Union victory (and 23,000 combined dead) even though Confederate troops under Joseph E. Johnston and Pierre Beauregard had struck first and almost pushed the Union army back out of Tennessee altogether. With the Union victory came the certainty that Tennessee was forever lost to the South.
