• Tom Thumb


Definition: Builder of the Tom Thumb, the first steam locomotive in the United States. He also introduced into the U.S. the Bessemer process for steelmaking, which helped make high-quality, low-cost steel. He also opened Cooper Union, a New York college that taught adults for free. He also invented what we call Jell-O, in 1845.
