Definition: Confederate Major General and Mexican War veteran who served as a brigade and corps commander in the Army of Northern Virginia for all of that army's major battles during the Civil War. In early 1864, with Lee pinned down in siege at Petersburg, Early made a mad dash up Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, heading for Washington, D.C. It was a desperate attempt to frighten the North, but Union General Philip Sheridan intercepted Early, kept him at bay for several skirmishes and a few battles, and finally routed him and seized control of the Valley for good in August.
