Definition: Mexican War veteran and Union general who led the Army of the Potomac to the disastrous defeat at Chancellorsville. He had previously fought at Seven Days, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. After the disgrace at Chancellorsville, he finished out his career in the Chattanooga and Atlanta campaigns.
