Definition: British general who met with great success early in the war but met his end at Saratoga. He was at the Battle of Bunker Hill and helped capture Fort Ticonderoga. He had plans for an invasion of New York and got as far as Saratoga, where he was stopped and forced to surrender to American General Horatio Gates, partly because Burgoyne's support, in the person of General William Howe, had marched toward Philadelphia instead. Burgoyne left the army and returned home a disgrace.
