Definition: Mexican War veteran and Confederate general who fought under Robert E. Lee at most of the major battles fought by the Army of Northern Virginia. He was famous for his ability to hold a line, best demonstrated in the Battle of Fredericksburg. He fought at the Battle of Chickamauga and was briefly at Chattanooga but was sent away at the last minute. He also was commander of the troops that made Pickett's Charge, the disastrous assault on Cemetery Ridge during the Battle of Gettysburg.
