Definition: Site of many important Civil War events, including the battle of the ironclads, the Monitor and Merrimack; the land-based beginning of McClellan's Peninsular Campaign; and a diplomatic conference aimed at ending the war (attended by Lincoln and War Secretary Edwin Stanton for the Union and Vice-President Alexander Stephens, President Pro Tem of the Senate R.M.T. Hunter of Virginia, and Judge John A. Campbell of Alabama for the Confederacy).
