Definition: First Lord of the Treasury and later Prime Minister who was responsible for some of the most outlandish taxes on the American colonies, including the Sugar Act and the Stamp Act. These taxes were in part of a result of a strategy by Grenville to boost his popularity in Britain by lowering taxes there. In order to keep revenues coming in, he raised taxes on the colonies.
