Eli Whitney

 Related Terms

• Cotton Gin

Definition: Inventor of the cotton gin (1793) and later the process of mass production (1798). This process was used to make rifles. The cotton gin was a hugely successful invention because people didn't have to separate cotton by hand anymore. It also meant that the cotton fiber made from the lint could be produced much faster than ever before. This made cotton into a huge cash crop. However, so many people made their own cotton gins that Whitney made very little money off it.
