Definition: American general who played a large part in the American victory at Saratoga but suffered defeat at Charleston. He was there because he had led an attack on British-held Savannah and had been forced to retreat to Charleston. He was taken prisoner, then exchanged for a British officer. He later led American troops to Yorktown and accepted General Charles Cornwallis's sword in surrender, marking the end of the Revolutionary War. He later was a member of the Massachusetts convention to ratify the Constitution.
