Definition: San Antonio-area fort hat was overrun by Mexican forces on March 6, 1836. The Mexican army under General Santa Anna killed every one of the 189 American defenders, including Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie. The defeat at the Alamo became a rallying cry for Americans when the Mexican War began a decade later.
