The Wilderness

Definition: Battle following the disastrous Wilderness campaign. For five savage days, the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia hurled themselves at each other. When the fighting stopped, many men were dead (about 20,000 to be exact) but no ground was gained. Grant, however, did not retreat. Instead, he headed south, toward Richmond.
