Definition: Branch of the armed forces begun by the Second Continental Congress in 1775. The first amphibious landing came the next year. The Marines were disbanded in 1783, following the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Revolutionary War. The Marines were restarted in 1798 and made a name for themselves with victories against the Barbary Pirates in 1805 in Tripoli. They also saw action in the Mexican War.
