Definition: Vice-President of the United States under James Buchanan, he ran for president as a Southern Democrat in 1860, finishing third in the popular vote but second in the electoral vote. He was a corps commander in the Army of Mississippi at the Battle of Shiloh and served under Braxton Bragg at Murfreesboro and Chickamauga and then Robert E. Lee at Cold Harbor. He served as Confederate Secretary of War from February, 1864 until the end of the Civil War.
