Republican Party

Definition: former governor of and Representative and Senator from Maine and Lincoln's first vice-president. A strong opponent of slavery, he left the Democratic Party in 1856 and helped form the Republican Party. He was not considered for re-election because Lincoln wanted a Democrat on the ticket.
