Army of the Potomac
Ambrose Burnside

Definition: Extreme folly committed by Army of the Potomac General Ambrose Burnside, who marched wave after wave of troops across open ground into the teeth of Confederate batteries ensconced on the high ground of Marye's Heights on Dec. 13, 1862. More than 12,000 Union soldiers died, compared to less than 6,000 Confederates.
