Definition: Vermont native who fought in the French and Indian War and Revolutionary War. He and his Green Mountain Boys, along with Benedict Arnold, were instrumental in the capture of Fort Ticonderoga, which contained a stockpile of British weapons. He later led an invasion of Montreal that failed miserably. He was captured and later freed in a prisoner exchange. He was commander of the Vermont militia and a leading voice for Vermont's becoming a state.
