Definition: Series of 1862 battles (during the Peninsular Campaign) taken together to illustrate Lee's ability to demoralize McClellan and the North with quick strikes by small forces on larger ones. For the record, the larger battles were at Mechanicsville, Gaines; Mill, Savage's Station, Frayser's Farm, and Malvern Hill. When the battles were over, the Army of the Potomac had lost 15,000 men and had retreated to the James River.
