Definition: Main eastern Union army, commanded by a series of commanders, including Irvin McDowell, George McClellan, Ambrose Burnside, Joseph Hooker, George Gordon Meade, and Ulysses S. Grant. Charged with protecting the nation's capitol, Washington, the Army of the Potomac was also tasked with shutting down the Confederate eastern army under Robert E. Lee.
