Long-range Warning System On Its Way January 24, 2005
A sophisticated early warning system is definitely on the radar for South Asia after a proposal for such a system was approved at the World Conference of Disasters Reduction, which closed during the weekend after a five-day run in Kobe, Japan. Representatives from 168 nations attended, and the plan for adopting the early warning system was the main result, with a pledge of $8 million from a group of nations including Japan, Sweden, and the European Union. (A United Nations estimate projected that the total cost of the project would approach $30 million.) The system will be similar to the one now in use in the Pacific Ocean, which will serve as the primary warning system until the Indian Ocean one is built. Graphics courtesy of ArtToday |
