Long-range Warning System On Its Way

A sophisticated early warning system is definitely on the radar for South Asia after a proposal for such a system was approved at the World Conference of Disasters Reduction, which closed during the weekend after a five-day run in Kobe, Japan. Representatives from 168 nations attended, and the plan for adopting the early warning system was the main result, with a pledge of $8 million from a group of nations including Japan, Sweden, and the European Union. (A United Nations estimate projected that the total cost of the project would approach $30 million.)
The system will be similar to the one now in use in the Pacific Ocean, which will serve as the primary warning system until the Indian Ocean one is built.
