Sydney pedestrians will soon see red lights on the ground, in an effort to cut down on injuries suffered by people both walking and holding a smartphone.

Intersections at five locations in Australia's largest city will have the sidewalk lights beginning in December, as part of a six-month trial that mirrors recent initiatives in Germany.

A recent study out of Europe, that people in six European cities, found that 17 percent of the 14,000 people surveyed were in the habit of looking at their smartphone while walking on sidewalks.

In addition, a University of Queensland study found that people who made a habit of looking at a smartphone while walking on a sidewalk had trouble maintaining their balance.

Sydney has launched a larger initiative, named Towards Zero, to decrease injuries suffered by pedestrians and drivers.
