Movie Theaters to Install Satellite Dishes

Satellite movies are coming to a theater near you, mostly.

By the end of 2013, many movie theaters around America will be equipped with their own satellite dishes, so that they can get movies much more easily and cheaply from movie studios than by the traditional method. Estimates are that cost savings to movie studios will be 90 percent of current distribution. (Ticket costs are not expected to undergo a similar drop, although money saved by studios in this way could enable them to make more movies.)

Onboard so far are AMC, Cinemark, and Regal, the three largest American theater chains, and five Hollywood studios: Disney, Lionsgate, Paramount, Universal, and Warner Bros. Sony and 20th Century Fox are in negotiations to join the effort.

Those three movie theater chains include a large number of theaters but not, of course, all of them. Smaller movie houses, as well as independent ones, are not likely to be part of the deal.

The installation of satellite delivery could widen the offerings for theater-goers, to include things like broadcasts of opera performances or sporting events, or even popular television show.
