Dubai to Build World's Biggest Mall
July 6, 2014
Dubai, home to the world's tallest tower, will soon have two of the world's largest malls, developers say.
Dubai Holding has announced plans to build the Mall of the World, a domed project that will include the 8-million-square-feet shopping mall, a theme park, and a large bloc of hotels and serviced apartments. The developer did not announce a price tag or a timeline for completion, but the country is due to be the host for the World Expo trade fair in 2020.
The largest mall is currently the New South China Mall, in Dongguan, which has 7.1 million square feet of leasable area.
Dubai is already home to the world's largest mall by total area, the Dubai Mall, which covers 12.1 million square feet in its large complex, which includes a 3.77-million-square-feet mall, a multistory aquarium, and an indoor ice rink.
The Mall of the World would have a glass dome that can be opened during winter but would be closed, allowing for air conditioning in summer. Plans also call for a climated-controlled street scheme that links the mall to a cultural and theater district and a "wellness" district populated by medical facilities.
Dubai is home as well to the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, at more than 2,700 feet.
The largest shopping mall in the United States is the Mall of America, in Bloomington, Minn., at 4.2 million square feet.
