Legoland is coming to the Middle East.

Work will begin in February 2015 on the Dubai Parks and Resorts project, a massive entertainment and commercial area that will include a Bollywood-themed park dedicated to the Indian film industry, a family-friendly hotel, a huge retail and food plaza, and Legoland. The project, the first part of which is expected to be finished a year after construction begins, is similar to two other projects, for a Legoland and for Universal Studios parks, that were put on hold because of the global financial crisis.

The $2.7 billion project has the political and financial support of Sheik Mohammed bin Rashia Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, one of the United Arab Emirates.

Already under way in Dubai is construction of the Mall of the World, which will, when completed, be the world's biggest mall.

Also planned for Dubai is a $1.6 billion island development slated to include the world's largest Ferris wheel. Dubai is already home to the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.

Legolands can currently be found in Billund, Denmark; Gunzburg, Germany; Johor, Malaysia; Windsor, the United Kingdom; and California and Florida, in the United States. Denmark-based Lego has plans for Legoland parks to open in South Korea and Japan before the end of the decade.
