Timeline of the Disaster

The number of people killed or presumed dead in the Sumatra Tsunami devasation now exceeds 294,000, according to United Nations officials.

Indonesia was the country hardest-hit. The number of people dead or missing there now stands at 240,774.

Sri Lanka, off the southeast coast of India, has the second-highest death toll, at 30,957. India itself lost 16,389 people.

More than one month after the underwater earthquake and tsunami hit, most of the nations still maintained separate numbers for confirmed dead and missing; many officials, however, were prepared to assume that most of the people still missing were presumed dead.
