Among the events being planned to mark the one-hundred-year anniversary of the start of World War I is a soccer game.

On Christmas Day in 1914, the warring soldiers laid down their weapons and met in no-man's land for a discussion, in which has come to be known as the Christmas Truce. They exchanged gifts and, in one location, even played a bit of soccer (or football, as those in many countries term it). Belgian, British, French, and German soldiers took part in the improvised game.

Now, discussions are under way to stage a commemorative soccer game, in Flanders. Whether the game would take place on Christmas 2014 has yet to be decided.

The game would be part of a larger series of events aimed at reminding people of the horrors of the four-year war, which began on July 28, 1914, and ended on November, 11, 1918.
