The 2016 Olympic Torch relay will go through 250 cities and towns, reaching 90 percent of Brazil's estimated 200 million people.

The Games begin on August 5, with the opening ceremonies taking place at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The relay is expected to start up to 100 days before that and go through all 26 states of the country's states and the national capital, Brasilia.

Relay organizers are seeking at least 10,000 people to carry the Olympic Torch along the route, which will include 20,000 kilometers on the ground and 10,000 kilometers in the air.

More details about the route, including its start point, will be released soon, the organizers said.

The Games will close August 21. In all, 306 events encompassing 41 disciplines and 28 sports will take place.
