Olympics Events Already Sold Out
April 28, 2011

The opening and closing ceremonies for the 2012 London Olympics are already sold out, as are five sporting events.

Organizers of the Olympics reported more than 20 million ticket requests, 95 percent of which came from the United Kingdom. Tickets were available online in 26 European countries and through national Olympic committees elsewhere. Prices ranged from $33 to $3,320 — for the best seat at the opening ceremony.

Sold out are cross-country equestrian, modern pentathlon, rhythmic gymnastics, track cycling, and triathlon. Especially sold out were the opening and closing ceremonies. Ticketing officials reported that requests for these events numbered 10 times the number of tickets available and that, for the most part, the tickets would be distributed through a lottery-like system. Applicants will find out by June 24 if they are successful.

The Olympics open on July 27, 2012, and close on August 12, will bookend a total of 302 medal events in 26 sports. The full schedule is here.
